Overview

Oceanography (OCEANO) Officers, also known as METOC, are the U.S. Navy's experts in meteorology and oceanography, playing a critical role in ensuring freedom of action for naval forces. They lead the collection and analysis of environmental data to support fleet operations, providing safety in navigation and enhancing the capability of Navy forces.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters.
  • Enhance the lethality and operational capability of Navy forces.
  • Lead teams of varying sizes, from small units to large commands.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands.

Required skills

  • Expertise in meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, bathymetry, geophysics, and astrometry.
  • Ability to work in diverse environments including at sea and ashore.
  • Strong analytical and data processing skills.
  • Leadership and teamwork capabilities.
  • Baccalaureate degree in a technical field, including physics, oceanography, meteorology, or engineering.
  • Completion of college-level calculus and physics courses.
