Overview

Oceanography Officers, also referred to as METOC, are essential geophysical experts in the U.S. Navy, specializing in the applications of meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, bathymetry, and geophysics. They play a critical role in ensuring the Navy maintains operational freedom and deterrence capabilities by expertly managing and disseminating environmental data for both maritime and joint operations.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, and dissemination of environmental data
  • Support fleet and joint operations to ensure safety of navigation
  • Manage a range of teams from small detachments to large commands
  • Serve as the sole geophysical expert at operational commands
  • Engage in challenging operational billets at sea and ashore

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field with a GPA of 2.8 or greater
  • Completion of full calculus series and calculus-based physics series
  • Technical knowledge in physics, physics-based oceanography, meteorology, or earth science
  • Eligibility for sea duty and Top-Secret security clearance
  • Meeting Navy medical, vision, and fitness standards
