Overview

The Oceanographer/Meteorologist position within the US Navy involves serving as a geophysical expert focused on meteorology, oceanography, and related fields. Officers in this role support fleet operations by collecting and analyzing environmental data to ensure the Navy's operational effectiveness and safety at sea.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide timely support to fleet and joint operations
  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, and dissemination of environmental data
  • Ensure navigation safety and access to denied waters
  • Lead teams of various sizes, from small detachments to large commands
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands

Required skills

  • Degree in a technical field (physics, oceanography, meteorology, engineering, etc.)
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or greater
  • Completed college calculus series and calculus-based physics series
  • Eligibility to serve as a United States Navy Officer
  • Ability to meet medical, vision, and physical fitness standards
  • Qualify for Top-Secret security clearance
  • Leadership and team management skills
  • Experience in data analysis and geophysical sciences
