Overview

The Oceanographer/Meteorologist role at the US Navy involves serving as geophysical experts in a variety of challenging assignments both at sea and ashore. Officers are responsible for the collection, processing, analysis, and dissemination of environmental data to support fleet operations, ensuring the Navy's operational capability and safety.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead collection, processing, and analysis of environmental data for fleet operations.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters.
  • Lead small to large teams in various operational environments.
  • Serve as the main geophysical expert at an operational command.
  • Engage in diverse assignments worldwide, including sea duties on various Navy vessels and shore roles in research facilities.

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field (preferably physics, oceanography, meteorology, or related subjects).
  • Completion of college-level calculus and physics courses.
  • Ability to meet Navy enlistment and medical standards.
  • Qualification for sea duty and obtaining a Top-Secret security clearance.
  • Leadership and team coordination skills.
  • Experience in data analysis and geophysical sciences.
