Overview

The Oceanographer/Meteorologist position at the US Navy involves serving as a geophysical expert who applies various scientific disciplines to support Navy operations. Officers in this role are responsible for ensuring freedom of navigation and action in various maritime environments.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters.
  • Lead teams for tactical operations, ranging from small units to large commands.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands.

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field, preferably in physics, oceanography, meteorology, or engineering.
  • Strong understanding of meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and geophysics.
  • Ability to meet age, medical, vision, and fitness standards for Navy service.
  • Qualify for sea duty and obtain required security clearance.
