Overview

Oceanography Officers (METOC) in the U.S. Navy are geophysical experts responsible for applying meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and geophysics to ensure operational effectiveness. They collect, process, and disseminate environmental data to support fleet operations and ensure the safety and maneuverability of Navy forces worldwide.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide timely and relevant support to fleet and joint operations
  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, and dissemination of environmental data
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters
  • Increase the lethality of Navy forces
  • Lead teams of varying sizes from small 3-4 person units to large commands
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at an operational command
