Overview

Oceanography Officers, also known as METOC, are vital geophysical experts in the U.S. Navy specializing in meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and related fields. Their mission is to deliver comprehensive environmental data support to fleet and joint operations, ensuring safe navigation and tactical maneuverability.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide timely support to fleet and joint operations by collecting and disseminating environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and freedom to maneuver for Navy forces.
  • Lead teams ranging from small deployable units to large commands.
  • Serve as the sole geophysical expert at operational commands.
