Overview

Oceanography (OCEANO) Officers in the U.S. Navy serve as geophysical experts in meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and related fields. Their mission is to ensure freedom of action for the Navy by providing timely environmental data to support operations and enhance naval capabilities.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide support to fleet and joint operations through environmental data collection and analysis.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and access to denied waters.
  • Lead teams from small detachments to large commands.
  • Serve as the sole geophysical expert at operational commands.

Required skills

  • Baccalaureate degree in a technical field (preferred in physics, oceanography, meteorology, or related areas)
  • Completion of full college calculus and calculus-based physics series
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Ability to qualify for sea duty and a Top-Secret security clearance
  • Experience in data analysis and environmental science
