Job Description

Overview

As an Oceanographer, also known as an OCEANO Officer, you will serve as a geophysical expert within the U.S. Navy, applying your knowledge of meteorology, oceanography, and related fields to support fleet operations. Your role is critical in ensuring freedom of action for Navy forces by leading the collection, processing, and dissemination of environmental data and providing timely operational support.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Support fleet and joint operations by ensuring the safety of navigation and access to denied waters.
  • Manage teams from small deployable units to large commands.
  • Serve as the sole geophysical expert at an operational command.

Required skills

  • Baccalaureate degree in a technical field, preferably in physics, oceanography, meteorology, or engineering
  • Completion of college calculus and physics series with specified minimum grades
  • Leadership and team management skills
  • Operational planning and research abilities
  • Eligibility for a Top-Secret security clearance
