Overview

Oceanography Officers, also known as METOC, are the U.S. Navy's experts in geophysics and various environmental sciences. Their primary mission is to analyze and apply knowledge of the physical environment to support naval operations, ensuring safety and operational effectiveness both at sea and ashore.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and freedom to maneuver for Navy forces.
  • Lead teams of varying sizes, from small units to large commands.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands.

Required skills

  • Expertise in meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and geophysics.
  • Experience in data analysis and team management.
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field, preferably in physics, oceanography, meteorology, or related areas.
  • Completion of college calculus and physics series.
