Overview

The Nurse Extern - Behavioral Health position at SSM Health DePaul Hospital is a transitional role for nursing students currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program. Students must have completed their fundamentals of nursing class and first clinical rotation, and the role aims to provide real-world clinical training as they prepare to graduate and potentially transition into a graduate nurse position.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist in performing a variety of nursing care services for patients under the direction of an RN.
  • Take vital signs and monitor patient behavior and physical condition.
  • Assist patients with daily living activities such as bathing, feeding, and hygiene.
  • Perform procedures including dressing changes and catheter care.
  • Provide emotional and psychological support to patients.
  • Communicate patient changes and needs to licensed nurses.
  • Prepare patients for discharge and maintain supplies and equipment.
  • Participate actively as a member of the healthcare team.

Required skills

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing
  • Completion of fundamentals of nursing class and first clinical rotation
  • Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) certification
