Overview

The Motor Grader Operator at Peckham Industries is responsible for executing precise grading and surface preparation for asphalt paving operations. This crucial role involves working with grade stakes, plans, or GPS systems to ensure optimal pavement quality and drainage. The operator must maintain production flow, prioritize safety on construction sites, and collaborate effectively with other teams to meet project specifications.

Key responsibilities

  • Establish precise grades and elevations for base preparation and pavement performance
  • Complete grading work ahead of paving operations to maintain production flow
  • Deliver smooth, uniform subgrade and base surfaces meeting project tolerances
  • Operate grader safely in active construction environments
  • Shape surfaces for proper slope, crown, and drainage
  • Maximize equipment performance through daily inspections
  • Coordinate with foremen, survey/layout teams, and paving crews
  • Minimize rework by achieving grade within tolerance on the first pass
  • Adjust grading techniques based on material conditions and site variables

Required skills

  • Experience operating motor graders in road construction or paving
  • Strong ability to perform fine grading to tight tolerances
  • Ability to read and interpret grade stakes, site plans, and GPS systems
  • Understanding of drainage principles and road construction methods
  • Strong communication skills for team coordination

  • Mechanical aptitude for basic equipment issues and preventative maintenance
