Overview

Oceanography Officers, also known as METOC, in the U.S. Navy are experts in meteorology and related fields, tasked with applying their knowledge to ensure the operational effectiveness of Navy missions. They provide vital support to fleet operations through the collection and analysis of environmental data, ensuring safe navigation and enhancing the capabilities of Navy forces.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the collection, processing, prediction, exploitation, and dissemination of environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation and freedom to maneuver in denied waters.
  • Lead teams ranging from small detachments to large commands.
  • Serve as the geophysical expert at operational commands.
