Job Description

Overview

Oceanography Officers, also known as METOC, are experts in the U.S. Navy responsible for applying knowledge of meteorology, oceanography, and geophysics to gain an understanding of the physical environment. Their mission is to ensure naval operations can deter aggression, maintain freedom of movement, and ultimately contribute to victory in conflict scenarios.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide timely support to fleet and joint operations by managing environmental data.
  • Ensure safety of navigation in various waters and increase the Navy's operational effectiveness.
  • Lead teams ranging in size from small detachments to large commands.
  • Serve as the sole geophysical expert in an operational command.
  • Engage in a variety of challenging operational roles both at sea and onshore.

Required skills

  • Baccalaureate degree in a technical field, preferably in physics, oceanography, meteorology, or engineering.
  • Completed full calculus series and calculus-based physics with minimum required averages.
  • Ability to meet general Navy enlistment or commissioning standards.
  • Eligibility for Top-Secret security clearance.
  • Leadership and team management skills.
