Job Description

Overview

UNC Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Specialist for the Microbiology Laboratory in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This role supports technical, regulatory, and safety needs across Central Processing, Bacteriology, and Special Microbiology areas while collaborating with laboratory supervisors and directors.

Key responsibilities

  • Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies for patient and employee safety
  • Collaborate in teams and independently to manage daily workload efficiently
  • Maintain documentation as required by procedures
  • Monitor quality management program components and implement enhancements
  • Update quality control ranges and assist with adjustments
  • Participate in equipment and test evaluations, data collection, and analysis
  • Implement new procedures and equipment as per guidelines
  • Assist in developing standard operating procedures for patient testing
  • Generate reports to monitor turnaround times and metrics
  • Review regulatory checklists and maintain adherence to regulatory requirements
  • Facilitate proficiency survey materials and evaluate results
  • Conduct mock inspections in preparation for CAP inspections
  • Maintain chemical inventory and SDS sheets in collaboration with Quality Management
  • Coordinate LIS/HIS/middleware configuration and testing for instrumentation

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 24 semester hours of science credits
  • MLS/MT (ASCP), MT (NCA) or MT (AMT) certification
  • Three years of experience as a medical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques, regulatory compliance, and quality control
  • Proficiency in data analysis and documentation
