Job Description

Overview

UNC Health is seeking a Medical Lab Specialist to work in the Microbiology Laboratory, with responsibilities spanning the Central Processing, Bacteriology, and Special Microbiology areas. This role involves collaboration with laboratory leadership to ensure compliance with technical and regulatory standards while supporting routine patient testing.

Key responsibilities

  • Follow written laboratory policies and procedures for patient and employee safety
  • Collaborate in teams and independently to meet daily workload and turnaround times
  • Maintain documentation as required by procedures
  • Monitor quality management programs and document investigations and enhancements
  • Update quality control ranges and assist with lot changes
  • Participate in equipment and test evaluations and data analysis
  • Implement new procedures and equipment according to guidelines
  • Develop standard operating procedures for patient testing
  • Generate reports to monitor turnaround times and other metrics
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for CLIA, CAP, JCAHO, and OSHA
  • Conduct mock inspections to prepare for CAP inspections
  • Maintain chemical inventory and current SDS sheets
  • Coordinate LIS/HIS/middleware configuration and testing for instrumentation

Required skills

  • Bachelors degree with a minimum of 24 semester hours of science credits
  • MLS/MT (ASCP), MT (NCA), or MT (AMT) certification
  • Three years of experience as a medical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques, quality control, and regulatory compliance
  • Analytical problem-solving and collaboration skills
  • Documentation and patient safety focus
