Overview

The Medical Lab Scientist position at Duke Health focuses on performing a variety of routine and complex laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The successful candidate will work in the Central Automated Lab during second shift hours, contributing to high-quality patient care and supporting a team devoted to advanced health solutions.

Key responsibilities

  • Perform routine and complex laboratory tests using standard techniques and equipment
  • Handle specimens and operate manual or computerized instrumentation
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments according to standard procedures
  • Process patient samples for testing and ensure quality material is used
  • Troubleshoot assay problems as directed and communicate issues to senior staff
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment
  • Participate in developing new laboratory tests and techniques
  • Review lab inspection documents to ensure compliance
  • Attend laboratory meetings and training sessions as required
  • Provide technical guidance to students and staff

Required skills

  • Bachelors of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Tech
  • ASCP certification preferred
  • Experience with laboratory testing and quality control procedures
  • Data analysis and technical troubleshooting skills
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and compliance regulations
