Overview

The Medical Assistant II, Certified at UNC Health Care provides essential clinical and administrative support in an outpatient clinic setting. Working under the supervision of healthcare providers, this role involves patient care activities, collecting medical data, administering medications, and assisting in various procedures to enhance patient well-being.

Key responsibilities

  • Perform rooming and intake process, collecting vital signs and patient data
  • Collect medical and social history from patients and families
  • Assist providers during treatments, examinations, and procedures
  • Collect specimens and perform phlebotomy
  • Administer medications under provider direction
  • Perform tests such as EKGs and eye exams
  • Ensure exam rooms are stocked with necessary supplies and educational materials
  • Provide patients with follow-up instructions and educational materials
  • Assist with patient registration, check in/check out, and appointment scheduling
  • Answer clinic telephones and assist with in-basket tasks
  • Assist in emergency situations as directed by healthcare professionals
  • Precept new medical assistant hires and externs, and train other medical assistants
  • Manage clinic supply ordering and maintain preventive health measures

Required skills

  • Medical Assistant certification from recognized accrediting bodies
  • Basic Life Support Certification
  • One year of full-time experience as a Certified Medical Assistant
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to engage positively with patients and families
  • Proficient in using computers for electronic medical records
