Job Description

Overview

The Mechanic B at Interstate Waste Services is responsible for the independent diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on refuse trucks, heavy trucks/tractors, trailers, and heavy equipment. This role includes mentoring Level C technicians, supporting road calls, and ensuring compliance and high uptime for the fleet.

Key responsibilities

  • Independently diagnose and repair diesel and gasoline engines
  • Repair drivetrain components including clutches, transmissions, and differentials
  • Fix air and hydraulic brake systems and suspension components
  • Diagnose hydraulic systems on refuse equipment
  • Repair electrical systems including wiring and sensors
  • Perform DOT-compliant inspections and preventive maintenance
  • Respond to road calls and breakdowns, performing repairs to return vehicles to service
  • Mentor Level C technicians on best practices and troubleshooting
  • Complete work orders meticulously, documenting all repairs

Required skills

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 3-5+ years of experience as a mechanic/technician
  • Valid CDL Class B with air brake endorsement preferred
  • Proficiency in hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
  • Ability to read OEM service manuals and wiring diagrams
  • Experience with refuse/solid waste or heavy trucking fleets
  • ASE certifications in Medium/Heavy Truck or Truck Equipment preferred
  • Basic welding and cutting skills preferred
  • Familiarity with fleet maintenance and inventory systems preferred
