Overview

The Mechanic B at Interstate Waste Services is a journeyman-level role that involves diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on refuse trucks, heavy trucks, and equipment. The role requires mentoring Level C technicians, ensuring fleet uptime and DOT compliance, while working in a company dedicated to high-quality waste and recycling services.

Key responsibilities

  • Independently diagnose and repair diesel and gasoline engines, drivetrain components, brake systems, and electrical systems.
  • Perform DOT-compliant inspections and preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Respond to road calls and breakdowns, providing safe temporary or permanent repairs.
  • Guide and mentor Level C technicians on best practices and repair methods.
  • Complete detailed work orders documenting all phases of repairs and parts used.

Required skills

  • 3-5+ years experience as a diesel, truck, or heavy equipment mechanic.
  • Proficiency with hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
  • Valid CDL Class B (or higher) with air brake endorsement preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret OEM service manuals and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience in refuse/solid waste or municipal trucking preferred.
  • ASE certifications in Medium/Heavy Truck or Truck Equipment preferred.
  • Basic welding and cutting skills preferred.
  • Familiarity with computerized fleet maintenance and parts inventory systems.

  • Salary range between USD $28.80 and $32.00 per hour.
