Overview

The Maintenance Multi-Craft Technician Trainee at Charter Steel serves as an entry-level member of the Maintenance Department, focusing on the safe and efficient operation of plant equipment and systems. This role involves learning and assisting with preventative and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment inspections under the guidance of experienced team members while demonstrating a commitment to safety and teamwork.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist with removing, disassembling, refurbishing, replacing, and aligning machinery and equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks under the guidance of experienced personnel.
  • Support corrective maintenance activities to reduce downtime and improve equipment reliability.
  • Learn to read basic mechanical and electrical prints and identify major components.
  • Assist with troubleshooting basic hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Support internal customer requests in a timely, safe, and professional manner.
  • Perform routine maintenance assignments while building technical skills.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts within the manufacturing process.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas in accordance with housekeeping expectations.

Required skills

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • One or more years of related industrial or maintenance experience preferred
  • Basic reading, math, and communication skills
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
  • Ability to visually inspect equipment and identify basic mechanical or electrical concerns
  • Basic knowledge of rigging, welding, cutting, and burning preferred
  • Basic understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic components
  • Basic knowledge of motors and drives
  • Exposure to electrical systems and electrical distribution
  • Basic instrumentation and PLC process knowledge
  • Good problem-solving skills
