Job Description

Overview

The Landfill Operator I at the City of Salina plays a vital role in waste management, operating heavy equipment to ensure the proper movement, compaction, and covering of municipal solid waste. The position emphasizes safety, environmental compliance, and public health protection while providing opportunities for career advancement.

Key responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain medium and heavy equipment such as compactors, dozers, and front-end loaders.
  • Plan fill cells and manage the movement, leveling, compaction, and covering of solid waste.
  • Prevent hazardous waste from entering the landfill and perform grounds maintenance.
  • Conduct maintenance checks on equipment and perform necessary repairs, including welding.
  • Prepare and maintain records of activities, including burial logs and special wastes.

Required skills

  • Experience operating heavy equipment (dozer, compactor, earth scraper)
  • One year of progressively responsible construction and maintenance work
  • Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid Kansas driver's license and ability to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) with endorsements
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Familiarity with safety protocols and environmental compliance

What the company offers

  • Starting pay between $21.14 and $22.20 per hour
  • Additional $1.50/hour for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. and before 6:00 a.m.
  • Paid Time Off: 48 hours of vacation upon hire, plus additional 48 hours earned during the year
  • 96 hours of sick leave during the first year
