Overview

The Grower Assistant position at Overland Park Garden Center involves supporting the Head Grower and other team members in maintaining high product quality within the Grower Department. This role focuses on crop health while offering opportunities to develop leadership skills by guiding team members on various tasks. It requires teamwork and a commitment to the overall success of the company.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Grower, Assistant Head Grower, and Grower in maintaining crop health
  • Lead small teams of staff to complete tasks effectively
  • Mix, load, and handle restricted use chemicals
  • Operate equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks with a clean driving record
  • Conduct crop checks and maintain records of irrigation, fertilizers, and chemical applications
  • Keep greenhouse spaces clean and organized
  • Scout for pests and diseases in plants
  • Collaborate with other departments when necessary

Required skills

  • 1-2+ years of experience in horticulture, greenhouse production, or related fields
  • Strong knowledge of plant materials including annuals, perennials, and tropical plants
  • Understanding of irrigation and fertility techniques
  • Experience operating forklift and other equipment
  • Ability to lift and carry items over 50 pounds
  • Strong technology skills, including proficiency in Microsoft products
  • Flexibility in working hours, including weekends and holidays
