Job Description

Overview

Hillsdale College is seeking a Grounds Keeper to maintain the campus grounds through various tasks including refuse removal, snow removal, turf and tree care, and equipment setup for College functions. The role involves heavy labor and may require some overtime during peak activity periods.

Key responsibilities

  • Examine and maintain College grounds on a routine basis
  • Mow grass and perform seasonal trimming with power tools
  • Weed flowerbeds and maintain shrubs and trees as directed
  • Remove dead branches and inspect trees for pests and disease
  • Fertilize turf and ornamentals as specified
  • Remove snow and ice using appropriate equipment during winter months
  • Spray herbicides for landscape maintenance
  • Assist with trash and debris removal
  • Manage irrigation and water turf and ornamentals
  • Move and set up furniture for College functions
  • Erect scaffolding and work from heights when necessary
  • Assist maintenance personnel as directed
  • Perform routine maintenance on College equipment
  • Seek training to enhance skills
  • Maintain punctuality and acceptable attendance

Required skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience
  • Ability to operate hand tools and vehicles
  • Commercial pesticide license (to be obtained within six months of hire)
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Valid Michigan commercial driver's license
  • Physical strength for heavy lifting
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
