Overview

Lyon Shipyard & Fabrication LLC is seeking a Government Barge Mechanic 2nd Class to perform maintenance, repair, and testing of marine mechanical and auxiliary systems in Norfolk, Virginia. The role demands expertise in hydraulic systems and compliance with safety regulations while working in an industrial shipyard environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance, repair, refurbishment, and testing of marine mechanical and auxiliary systems
  • Execute assigned work to ensure vessel integrity, including plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and general repairs
  • Read, interpret, and follow system manuals, technical drawings, blueprints, and installation requirements
  • Assist with assembling, installing, and testing hydraulic systems and high-pressure hose assemblies
  • Perform troubleshooting and support corrective actions under supervision
  • Carry out ship maintenance tasks based on written and verbal instructions
  • Follow all safety, quality, and environmental regulations
  • Use required personal protective equipment
  • Work assigned shifts and additional hours as needed

Required skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in marine, shipyard, or heavy industrial mechanical maintenance
  • Working knowledge of shipboard mechanical and hydraulic systems
  • 2-3 years of experience as a Barge Mechanic
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, drawings, and work instructions
  • Safe usage of hand tools, power tools, and measuring devices
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required base access and credentials
