Overview

The Genetics Counselor at Middlesex Health is responsible for providing risk assessment, education, and psychological support to individuals and families at risk for hereditary cancer. This role includes obtaining medical histories, assessing cancer risk, determining the need for genetic testing, and interpreting test results while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Key responsibilities

  • Obtain personal and family medical histories and assess cancer risks
  • Provide educational information about hereditary cancer syndromes
  • Determine the need for genetic testing and coordinate the process
  • Interpret genetic test results and provide post-test counseling
  • Discuss screening and prevention options based on family history
  • Maintain patient charting and billing submissions
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Plan and direct clinical genetic counseling protocols
  • Monitor program quality and report to management
  • Create and oversee programs for identifying referral candidates
  • Participate in cancer committees and case conferences
  • Supervise genetic counseling students as needed
  • Engage in research activities and contribute to professional development
  • Educate the public through presentations and written materials

Required skills

  • Master's degree in genetic counseling
  • Board certification by the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC)
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Experience in risk assessment and genetic counseling
  • Knowledge in ethical implications of genetic testing
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
