Job Description

Overview

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is seeking a Technical Specialist to join the Electronics Division at the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia. This role involves maintaining cryogenic systems and microwave receivers that are essential for radio astronomy research, requiring both technical skills and hands-on problem-solving capabilities.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair cryogenic system components
  • Test Gifford-McMahon refrigerators and Helium scroll compressors
  • Modify and repair cryogenic receivers operating up to 115 GHz
  • Assist in the construction of receivers for microwave frequencies
  • Record and analyze test data
  • Conduct vacuum Dewar tests with Helium leak detector
  • Order parts and equipment for the Cryogenics laboratory
  • Maintain detailed records of cryogenic systems maintenance
  • Comply with NRAO and legal safety policies
