Overview

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is seeking an experienced FPGA System Architect to lead the development of a digital signal processing system for a next-generation radio telescope synthesis array. This role involves significant hands-on FPGA development and technical leadership within a collaborative team environment, contributing to advanced systems enabling scientific research in astronomy.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead architecture, design, integration, and deployment of FPGA-based digital signal processing systems.
  • Define subsystem decomposition, interfaces, and data flow across system elements.
  • Execute subsystem development against system requirements and manage change requests.
  • Guide implementation of FPGA-based processing functions, including calibration and channelization.
  • Coordinate activities across FPGA, embedded software, and related engineering efforts.
  • Document system architectures, interfaces, design decisions, and verification methods.

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Eight years of experience in FPGA-based digital signal processing systems
  • Experience in architecture, development, and deployment of FPGA systems
  • High-throughput DSP experience including signal acquisition and calibration
  • Strong technical leadership and team coordination skills
  • Solid understanding of digital design fundamentals and FPGA development flows
  • Hands-on RTL development experience using hardware description languages
  • Familiarity with timing and synchronization concepts for FPGA systems
