Job Description

Overview

As a Lead Research Engineer for FPGA Design at GE Vernova, you will architect and develop advanced embedded systems for real-time controls and industrial communication applications. This role involves leading R&D projects that align with GE Vernova's energy missions and collaborating with various partners, including U.S. Government Agencies and universities, to transition technologies into GE business products.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop FPGA solutions for embedded systems and industrial control systems (ICS)
  • Leverage FPGA design tools to develop, simulate, test, and optimize real-time embedded systems
  • Shape and pursue opportunities with U.S. government agencies such as the DOE and DOD
  • Transition embedded control and communication systems from early-stage lab demos to fieldable prototypes
  • Collaborate with universities, industrial consortiums, and commercial partners
  • Publish technical papers, file patents, and contribute to open-source communities

Required skills

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field; or Master's with 2 years of industry experience; or
  • 2-5 years of strong FPGA and SoC design experience using Verilog, SystemVerilog, and VHDL
  • Experience with Xilinx and/or Intel (Altera) FPGA devices, tools, and ecosystems
  • Understanding of digital logic design, including FSMs, pipelining, and resource optimization
  • Experience with RTL simulation, synthesis, place-and-route, and timing closure
  • Knowledge of clock domain crossing (CDC) techniques and metastability mitigation
  • Familiarity with high-speed and standard interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C, Ethernet, PCIe, DDR)
  • Experience developing testbenches and performing functional verification
  • Proficiency with on-chip debugging tools
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, timing diagrams, and hardware datasheets
  • Experience using version control systems (Git preferred)
  • Experience with high-level synthesis (HLS) tools and model-based design with MathWorks MATLAB/Simulink
  • Embedded programming skills (e.g., C/C++, C#, Python)
  • Working knowledge of Linux build systems (e.g., Yocto) and Linux driver/kernel development
  • Familiarity with real-time operating systems (e.g., QNX, RTLinux, or VxWorks)
  • Experience with CI/CD technologies (e.g., GitLab, Jenkins)
