Job Description

Overview

FM is a leading mutual insurance company seeking a Construction Underwriter to join its growth-focused team in Johnston, Rhode Island. The role involves evaluating and managing large-scale construction risks, engaging with clients and brokers, and making underwriting decisions to ensure cost-effective risk management and business continuity for policyholder-owners.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead underwriting of complex construction projects with direct broker and client engagement
  • Evaluate risks and develop pricing strategies for large-scale builder's risk placements
  • Make underwriting recommendations and manage deals independently from initiation to execution
  • Analyze construction exposures, including contractor risk and key loss drivers
  • Maintain accurate documentation of underwriting decisions within internal systems
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and stakeholders
  • Lead negotiations on pricing, coverage structures, and terms
  • Partner with engineering and underwriting leadership to deliver integrated risk solutions
  • Contribute to the development of underwriting frameworks and best practices

Required skills

  • 10+ years of property underwriting experience
  • Experience underwriting construction risks, especially large or complex projects
  • Ability to manage deals end-to-end within authority levels
  • Experience leading broker and client negotiations regarding pricing and terms
  • Strong understanding of construction risk exposures and project structures
  • Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
  • CPCU, ARM, or advanced degree preferred
