Overview

The City of Leawood seeks a principled and visionary Fire Chief to lead their Fire Department, which is dedicated to delivering exceptional emergency services and community risk reduction. The ideal candidate will balance strategic leadership with operational excellence while fostering trust and accountability within the department and the community.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead with integrity and professionalism while building trust and accountability.
  • Foster a positive and high-performing workplace culture.
  • Develop future leaders and support succession planning.
  • Collaborate effectively across departments and with regional partners.
  • Communicate effectively and build consensus among diverse groups.
  • Balance operational excellence with long-term strategic planning.

  • Build strong relationships with department personnel, City leadership, and community stakeholders.

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field
  • At least ten years of progressively responsible experience in a fire service organization
  • Minimum of five years in a supervisory or command-level leadership role
  • Chief Fire Officer (CFO) designation
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Master's degree in a related field (preferred)
  • Completion of National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program (preferred)
  • Executive-level experience leading organizational change and strategic initiatives (preferred)
