Job Description

Overview

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is seeking a Technical Specialist II to work at their Green Bank facility. This role involves independently designing, fabricating, testing, and troubleshooting astronomical research-related equipment, contributing to advancements in the study of the universe.

Key responsibilities

  • Discuss design, layout, assembly, testing and troubleshooting procedures with engineers and technical staff.
  • Design, fabricate, assemble, and test prototype or production units.
  • Set up test apparatus and conduct functional, operational, and life tests.
  • Analyze and interpret test data and write technical reports.
  • Locate and evaluate substitute parts for obsolete components.
  • Record final test results and assist in the installation of equipment.
  • Train and lead technicians and others in their duties.
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures.

Required skills

  • Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of related experience in mechanics, electrical/electronic technology, physics, welding, or machining.
  • Skilled in practical principles of mechanics and electrical/electronic technology.
  • Working knowledge of tools and equipment for daily assignments.
  • Communication skills for effective verbal and written expression.
  • Advanced knowledge of office productivity software (e.g., MS Word, Excel, Adobe) and specific tools like MS Project, Acc
  • Prior experience with ERP Systems is preferred.
