Overview

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is seeking a Front End Electronics Engineer III to be based in Albuquerque, NM. This role involves the design, development, and testing of cryogenically cooled receivers and related electronic systems, contributing to cutting-edge research in radio astronomy.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist with design and development of cryogenically cooled receivers and test systems
  • Procure and test microwave components like polarizers, couplers, and amplifiers
  • Participate in maintenance activities for Front End electronics
  • Occasionally work outside or at heights over 40 feet
  • Lift and carry lab equipment as necessary
  • Travel domestically and internationally for work

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics
  • Minimum three years' experience in electronics design and testing
  • Attention to detail and highly organized
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365
  • Knowledge of RF, analog, and digital circuit design
  • Familiarity with electronics test equipment and automated test setups
  • Experience with RF/microwave CAD tools (Keysight ADS/Genesys, AWR Microwave Office)
  • Experience with EM simulation tools (Ansys Electronics Desktop, CST Studio)
  • PCB design skills (Altium Designer)
  • FPGA/firmware development tools experience (Intel Quartus, AMD Vivado)
