Job Description

Overview

The Electronics Engineer I-II at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) will join the Electronics Division responsible for the design, testing, and maintenance of electronic systems used in radio astronomy. This includes working on telescope servo systems, embedded systems, and digital signal processing, all while operating in a state-of-the-art research environment in Green Bank, West Virginia.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop embedded microcontroller systems
  • Support telescope servo systems
  • Maintain various radio telescope electronic systems
  • Assist in preparing costs and time analysis of projects
  • Make recommendations for procedures and equipment improvements
  • Provide leadership to technicians and students
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical and electronic equipment

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field
  • Knowledge of C, C++, Python, and PLC ladder logic programming
  • Experience with motor controllers and electro-mechanical systems
  • Familiarity with servo systems
  • Proficient with common test equipment such as oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers
  • Ability to troubleshoot systems to the component level
  • Experience with fiber optic cable splicing
  • Programming with LabVIEW or similar software
  • CAD software experience, such as AutoCAD and Inventor
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
