Job Description

Overview

The Education Attorney at East Bay Children's Law Offices (EBCLO) will enforce educational rights for youth in foster care, focusing on special education advocacy and school discipline defense. This full-time role involves regular client interaction, travel to school sites, and participation in various educational meetings to support children in marginalized communities.

Key responsibilities

  • Identify and advocate for clients' educational needs at school-related meetings
  • Defend students in school disciplinary hearings
  • Interview clients and collaterals
  • Provide technical assistance and training to EBCLO attorneys and social workers
  • Support relationships with UC Berkeley School of Law's student clinic programs
  • Participate in internal meetings and general office duties, including data entry
  • Track educational interventions and outcomes

Required skills

  • California bar membership (preferred)
  • Experience with education law and youth education rights
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated
  • Valid driver's license and access to an automobile
  • Interpersonal communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Research skills
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and logs
