Job Description

Overview

The Diesel Mechanic Class A for Interstate Waste Services is responsible for advanced diagnostics, complex repairs, and providing technical leadership within the fleet maintenance shop. This role involves working primarily on refuse trucks and heavy vehicles, prioritizing safety, quality, and regulatory compliance in operations.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead diagnosis and resolution of complex engine performance and emissions issues
  • Perform advanced repairs on hydraulic systems and major engine components
  • Train and coach Level B and Level C technicians
  • Analyze repeat repairs and recommend improvements to maintenance practices
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and local regulations
  • Support on-site repairs and road calls for equipment throughout the tri-state area
  • Assist in planning daily workload for the shop

Required skills

  • High school diploma or GED; additional technical training preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic
  • CDL Class B or A with air brake endorsement
  • Expert knowledge of heavy truck and refuse systems
  • Experience with diagnostic software and OEM service information
  • Proficient in using professional-grade tools for repairs
  • ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician or equivalent certifications preferred
  • Lead or senior technician experience in a fleet environment preferred
  • Familiarity with CNG/LNG or hybrid/EV drivetrains preferred
  • Strong communication and coaching skills
