Overview

The Diesel Mechanic Class A position at Interstate Waste Services is an overnight role focused on advanced diagnostics and complex repairs for refuse trucks and heavy equipment. The technician will provide technical leadership, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations while supporting fleet reliability and customer needs across the NYC tri-state area.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead diagnosis and resolution of complex issues with engine performance and emissions.
  • Perform major repairs including engine, transmission, and hydraulic rebuilds.
  • Train and mentor Level B and Level C technicians on diagnostics and maintenance standards.
  • Analyze repair trends to recommend improvements to preventive maintenance.
  • Support on-site repairs at customer locations and during road calls.
  • Assist with shop workload planning and job allocation.

Required skills

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic.
  • Expert knowledge of heavy truck and refuse systems.
  • Proficiency in diagnostic software and tools.
  • ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician or equivalent certifications preferred.
  • CDL Class A or B with air brake endorsement required.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
