Job Description

Overview

Interstate Waste Services is seeking a Diesel Mechanic Class A for the overnight shift from 2am to 10:30am, Monday to Friday. In this role, you will be the top-tier technical expert responsible for advanced diagnostics and complex repairs on refuse trucks and heavy vehicles, while ensuring safety and compliance across the fleet.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead diagnosis and resolution of complex engine and hydraulic issues.
  • Plan and execute major component repairs, including engines and transmissions.
  • Provide on-the-job training and coaching to lower-level technicians.
  • Analyze repeat repairs and recommend changes to maintenance strategies.
  • Support road calls and on-site repairs across the NYC tri-state area.
  • Assist in planning daily shop workload and allocate jobs appropriately.
  • Participate in audits, safety inspections, and regulatory reviews.

Required skills

  • 5+ years of diesel mechanic experience with advanced diagnostics.
  • CDL Class B or A with air brake endorsement.
  • Expert knowledge of heavy truck and refuse systems.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic software and scan tools.
  • Proven ability to perform complex diagnostics independently.
  • Ownership of professional-grade diagnostic and repair tools.
  • Preferred ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician certification.
  • Experience in a lead technician role preferred.
  • Knowledge of CNG/LNG, hybrid, or EV drivetrains preferred.
  • Strong communication and coaching skills.
