Job Description

Overview

The Diesel Mechanic Class A - Overnight position at Interstate Waste Services involves advanced diagnostics and major repairs on refuse trucks and heavy vehicles during the overnight shift. The mechanic will serve as a technical leader, providing training and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards across the fleet.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead diagnosis and resolution of complex mechanical issues
  • Perform advanced diagnostics on engine performance, electrical systems, and hydraulics
  • Plan and execute major component repairs including engines and transmissions
  • Provide technical training and coaching to Level B and Level C technicians
  • Analyze repair trends and recommend changes for maintenance procedures
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and environmental regulations
  • Support operational needs with complex road calls and repairs in the field
  • Assist in planning shop workload and evaluating parts and vendors

Required skills

  • High school diploma or GED required; additional technical training preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a diesel/heavy-equipment mechanic
  • CDL Class B or A with air brake endorsement required or preferred
  • Expert knowledge of heavy truck and refuse systems
  • Experience with diagnostic software, scan tools, and OEM service information
  • Proven ability to perform complex diagnostics and repairs independently
  • Ability to provide own professional-grade tools
  • ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician certification preferred
  • Experience in a lead role within a municipal or large private fleet preferred
  • Familiarity with CNG/LNG, hybrid, or EV drivetrains preferred
  • Strong communication and coaching skills
