Overview

The Diesel Mechanic Class A position at Interstate Waste Services involves advanced diagnostics and complex repairs for heavy trucks and refuse vehicles during the overnight shift. The role is pivotal for ensuring fleet compliance, reliability, and safety while providing technical leadership and training to other technicians.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the diagnosis and resolution of complex engine performance and emissions issues.
  • Execute major component repairs, including engine, transmission, and hydraulic rebuilds.
  • Provide technical training and support to Level B and Level C technicians.
  • Analyze failure trends and recommend changes to maintenance practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and state/local requirements.
  • Support on-site repairs and operational support for road calls.
  • Assist in planning daily shop workload and job allocation.

Required skills

  • High school diploma or GED; additional technical training preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic.
  • CDL Class B or A with air brake endorsement required or preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of heavy truck and refuse systems.
  • Proficient with diagnostic software and tools.
  • Ability to perform complex diagnostics and repairs independently.
  • Possess own professional-grade tools for diagnostic and repair work.
  • ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician certification preferred.
  • Experience in a lead or senior technician role is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CNG/LNG, hybrid, or EV drivetrains for heavy vehicles preferred.
