Overview

The Texas RioGrande Public Defender is seeking a Criminal Defense Attorney to lead the inaugural public defender's office in Eagle Pass, Texas. This role is pivotal in establishing effective legal representation for low-income individuals accused of crimes in regions lacking consistent access to justice.

Key responsibilities

  • Launch and lead the new public defender's office
  • Establish a culture of client-centered, team-oriented advocacy
  • Create processes for advocates in client representation
  • Communicate with local stakeholders to build community relationships
  • Track data measuring impact, including jail population and disposition data
  • Monitor attorney caseloads to ensure manageability
  • Collaborate with Executive Leadership on strategic initiatives
  • Maintain a 40% caseload of high level felonies, misdemeanors, and juvenile cases
  • Mentor and train newly licensed attorneys
  • Maintain a supportive and positive work environment

Required skills

  • Licensed to practice law in Texas or willing to take the Texas bar exam
  • At least five years of criminal litigation experience
  • At least 5 trials as lead counsel
  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills
  • Proficiency in Office365, legal research software, and case management systems
  • Professional fluency in Spanish (highly preferred)
