Overview

The Texas RioGrande Public Defender seeks a Criminal Defense Attorney to lead the establishment of a new public defender's office in Eagle Pass, Texas. This role involves creating a client-centered advocacy culture and transforming the criminal justice landscape in underserved communities by providing effective legal representation.

Key responsibilities

  • Launch and lead the new public defender's office
  • Establish a culture of client-centered, team-oriented advocacy
  • Create gold-standard processes for legal representation
  • Build strong community relationships with local stakeholders
  • Track data measuring the impact of representation
  • Monitor attorney caseloads to ensure manageability
  • Implement key strategies in partnership with executive leadership
  • Maintain a 40% caseload including high level felonies, misdemeanors, and juvenile cases
  • Mentor and train newly licensed attorneys
  • Contribute to the development of TRGPD

Required skills

  • Licensed to practice law in Texas or willingness to take Texas bar exam
  • At least five years of criminal litigation experience
  • At least 5 trials as lead counsel
  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills
  • Proficiency in Office365, legal research software, and case management systems
  • Professional fluency in Spanish (highly preferred)
