Overview

The Texas RioGrande Public Defender is seeking a Criminal Defense Attorney to lead a newly established public defender's office in Eagle Pass, Texas. This role is pivotal in transforming the justice system in historically underserved communities, focusing on client-centered advocacy and effective legal representation.

Key responsibilities

  • Launch and lead the Maverick Regional Public Defender's Office
  • Establish a culture of client-centered, team-oriented advocacy
  • Create processes for advocates to represent clients effectively
  • Communicate with local stakeholders to build community relationships
  • Track data measuring the impact of representation
  • Monitor attorney caseloads to ensure manageability
  • Collaborate with Executive Leadership on strategies and initiatives
  • Maintain a 40% caseload of high-level felonies, misdemeanors, and juvenile cases
  • Mentor and train newly licensed attorneys
  • Maintain a supportive work environment for the team
  • Contribute to the overall progress and development of TRGPD

Required skills

  • Licensed to practice law in Texas or willing to take the Texas bar exam
  • At least five years of criminal litigation experience
  • Experience as lead counsel in at least five jury trials
  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills
  • Proficiency in Office365 and legal research software
  • Experience with case management systems
  • Professional fluency in Spanish (highly preferred)
