Overview

The Texas RioGrande Public Defender is seeking a Criminal Defense Attorney to lead a newly established public defender's office in Eagle Pass, Texas. This role offers a transformative opportunity to significantly impact the criminal justice landscape in underserved border counties by providing effective legal representation to low-income clients. The ideal candidate will be a client-centered advocate committed to advancing justice and mentoring new attorneys.

Key responsibilities

  • Launch and lead the new public defender's office
  • Establish a culture of client-centered advocacy
  • Create processes for effective representation of clients
  • Communicate with local stakeholders to build community relationships
  • Track data measuring the impact of representation
  • Monitor attorney caseloads for manageability
  • Implement strategies to achieve office goals
  • Maintain a caseload of 40% high-level felonies, misdemeanors, and juvenile cases
  • Mentor and train newly licensed attorneys
  • Contribute to the overall development of TRGPD

Required skills

  • Licensed to practice law in Texas or willingness to take the Texas bar exam
  • At least five years of criminal litigation experience
  • Minimum of 5 jury trials as lead counsel
  • Management and leadership skills
  • Proficiency in Office365 and legal research software
  • Fluency in Spanish (highly preferred)
