Overview

The Texas RioGrande Public Defender is seeking a Criminal Defense Attorney to lead the establishment of a new public defender's office in Eagle Pass, Texas. This role involves providing quality legal representation for underserved communities and creating a culture of client-centered advocacy.

Key responsibilities

  • Launch and lead a brand-new public defender's office
  • Establish a culture of client-centered, team-oriented advocacy
  • Create gold-standard processes for advocates to follow in representing clients
  • Effectively communicate with local stakeholders to build community relationships
  • Track data measuring the impact of the representation
  • Monitor caseloads for attorneys to ensure manageability
  • Implement key strategies and initiatives with Executive Leadership
  • Maintain a caseload that includes high-level felonies, misdemeanors, and juvenile cases
  • Mentor and train newly licensed attorneys
  • Maintain a supportive and positive work environment

Required skills

  • Licensed to practice law in Texas or willingness to take the Texas bar exam
  • At least five years of criminal litigation experience
  • At least 5 trials as lead counsel
  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills
  • Proficiency in Office365 and legal research software
  • Professional fluency in Spanish (highly preferred)
