Overview

The Texas RioGrande Public Defender is seeking a Criminal Defense Attorney to launch and lead a new public defender's office in Eagle Pass, Texas. This role aims to establish effective legal representation for impoverished individuals facing criminal charges in underserved border counties.

Key responsibilities

  • Launch and lead a brand-new public defender's office
  • Establish a culture of client-centered, team-oriented advocacy
  • Create gold-standard processes for representing clients
  • Communicate with local stakeholders to build community relationships
  • Track data measuring the impact of representation on jail populations
  • Monitor attorney caseloads to ensure manageability
  • Partner with Executive Leadership to implement strategies and initiatives
  • Maintain a 40% caseload including high-level felonies and juvenile cases
  • Mentor and train newly licensed attorneys
  • Contribute to the development of the Texas RioGrande Public Defender

Required skills

  • Licensed to practice law in Texas or willingness to take the bar exam
  • At least five years of criminal litigation experience
  • At least 5 trials as lead counsel
  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills
  • Proficiency in Office365 and legal research software
  • Professional fluency in Spanish (highly preferred)
