Overview

New Haven Youth & Family Services is a nonprofit organization focused on empowering at-risk youth and families. They are seeking a hands-on Controller to work closely with the CEO, managing financial sustainability, supporting program growth, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting functions in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Monitor organizational and program budgets; analyze variances and provide recommendations.
  • Provide timely financial reports and analysis to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Finance/Audit Committees.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and support ongoing forecasting and financial planning.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Oversee financial management of grants, contracts, and restricted funds.
  • Advise leadership on financial aspects of contracts and risk management.
  • Establish, implement, and maintain strong internal controls and financial policies.
  • Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and liquidity.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate accounting department staff.
  • Provide financial training and technical assistance to program managers.

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Active California CPA license preferred
  • Minimum of ten years of accounting and financial management experience
  • Experience with audits, budgeting, contracts, and regulatory compliance
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Collaborative, hands-on leadership style
