Job Description

Overview

The VRF Commercial HVAC Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) heating and cooling systems in commercial buildings. This role requires technical expertise in advanced HVAC systems, the ability to interpret complex designs, and a focus on providing reliable climate control solutions.

Key responsibilities

  • Install VRF/VRV systems including outdoor units, indoor fan coils, branch selector boxes, and controls
  • Perform diagnostics and troubleshooting on multi-zone VRF systems from various manufacturers
  • Conduct routine maintenance including leak checks, coil cleaning, and electrical inspections
  • Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer specifications
  • Commission new systems by configuring controls and ensuring proper system communication
  • Repair or replace components such as compressors, expansion valves, and control boards
  • Document all work performed including service reports and maintenance logs
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and building owners on system performance
  • Follow safety protocols related to refrigerants and electrical systems

Required skills

  • Strong knowledge of VRF/VRV technology and refrigerant flow principles
  • Proficiency with refrigeration tools and diagnostic software
  • Ability to diagnose electrical and communication issues in HVAC systems
  • Experience with BACnet, Modbus, or proprietary control platforms
  • EPA Section 608 Certification
  • HVAC technical school training or equivalent field experience
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in commercial construction environments
