Overview

The Commercial Banking Trainee position at Midland States Bank is a full-time, structured development role aimed at building expertise in credit analysis and relationship banking. This 12-month program is designed for high-potential candidates, providing them the opportunity to learn from experienced commercial bankers while gaining hands-on experience in credit and client-facing tasks.

Key responsibilities

  • Participate in credit immersion under the supervision of the Credit Department
  • Analyze borrower financials and assess risk
  • Prepare credit memos and participate in loan committee processes
  • Monitor covenants and manage ongoing credit reporting
  • Gain exposure to C&I and CRE lending fundamentals
  • Rotate through core banking functions and prepare for client-facing responsibilities
  • Shadow business partners and participate in joint prospect/client calls
  • Practice pre-call planning and participate in sales calls

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, business, or related field
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Basic knowledge of financial statements
  • Coachability, resilience, and curiosity
  • Relationship-first mindset and client service orientation
  • Willingness to engage in business development
