Overview

MedStar Health is seeking a Coding Specialist III with expertise in Plastics and Podiatric Surgery coding. The role requires 5-7 years of medical coding experience and CPC certification, focusing on ensuring accurate and compliant coding for optimum reimbursement. This position also involves mentoring junior coders and collaborating with physicians on coding issues.

Key responsibilities

  • Abstracts and ensures accuracy of diagnosis, procedure, and patient demographics
  • Creates training and educational coding guidance documents for physicians
  • Develops guidance for clinicians to optimize dictations for compliance
  • Maintains billing, coding, and editing dictionaries in the billing system
  • Meets or exceeds established Quality Accuracy and Productivity standards
  • Contacts physicians for clarification of conflicting information in medical records
  • Determines the sequence of diagnoses for claims submission
  • Directs efforts towards quality standards identified through coding reviews
  • Handles complex coding case review including surgical coding and multi-visceral transplant cases
  • Mentors and guides Coding Specialists I and II on coding projects and complex scenarios
  • Recommends policy and procedural changes for revenue enhancement
  • Surveys coding guidelines from professional societies for current practices

Required skills

  • 5-7 years medical-professional coding experience
  • CPC certification
  • Experience leading others or work streams
  • Familiarity with encoding and abstracting computer systems
  • Knowledge of payer and CMS policies, and regulatory compliance
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
